Smith Spring Trail: A Hidden Gem in the Guadalupe Mountains

Smith Spring Trail is a 2.3 mile loop located near the Frijole Ranch History Museum.

Taking 62, you will turn onto Frijole Ranch Road, a gravel road, and take that to a moderately sized parking lot. There you’ll find a small pavilion with several picnic tables and restrooms.

But should you bother?

Don’t overlook this trail

The trail itself lacks visual appeal. It is mostly flat with little elevation change. Why are we even talking about it?

The main (only) reason I recommend this trail is the gem of the Smith Springs, which are about a mile into the hike, regardless of which direction you start out from.

In a fairly sudden shift, you will go from fairly typical and unremarkable scenery for the area into a magical forest complete with a few very small but still delightful waterfalls.

The area is roped off to prevent entrance to the water (sorry folks, no swimming). It’s a great spot for a picnic or a place to sit and meditate. And it’s quite a wonder to find flowing water in the desert.

The trail is also home to Manzanita Spring, which was not flowing at the time of our visit.

Once finished with the trail, be sure to check out the Frijole History museum if it’s open. This historic building has artifacts from some of the area’s earliest settlers and the ones who came after them, and tells the fascinating story of the land.

While the hike is pretty boring in my humble opinion, the Smith Springs is worth a gander and the history museum is actually fascinating.

Does saying that make me a nerd?

Who cares! Would (kinda) recommend!
